Why Cloth?

Contrary to what everyone would expect I started using cloth nappies on my children out of laziness. Ok I know that sounds far fetched but for me it really was the easier option.  Juggling just one baby and university wasn't easy. By the time another 3 baby's had come along there was no way I was going to  fight round the shops just to buy nappies.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When my first daughter was born I was a student, with very little money, and I found the cost of non cloth nappies very prohibitive. My daughter also had a habit of poohing out of the back and sides of the disposable, she started off in, just as I was about to catch the bus to lectures. After changing all her clothes repeatedly, I also discover on more then one occasion that the nappy I had just put on my daughter was the very last one in the house, and I just hoped I had long enough, to get to the shops between lectures, before she needed changing again. At this stage enough was enough, I was already washing poohey clothes so frequently that the thought of a dirty nappy no longer intimidated me.

At first I didn’t get on to well with the flat cloth nappies either (like prefolds and terry squares). So with the summer holiday and a sewing machine to hand I got thinking about what would be easier for me to use—after all my daughter was barely months old at this stage and according to all the books would be in nappies a long time yet. The better my nappy trials became, the more interest I had from parents at baby groups, and with the arrival of my second little nappy tester, and a long time researching the pros and cons of the nappies available, the idea to start Happy Nappy Days was born.

Incase your interested Happy Nappy Days, stands for Helaina, Natasha and Deanna—the names of my 3 girls, Thomas was too late to get a mention. Also in the early design days a friend who's son is called Dean was a great help so can be included in the name creation too.

Perks of Cloth Nappies - From My Experience

  •  I don’t like paying about 20p per nappy  for the pleasure of throwing away a nappy.

  •  Two weekly bin collection in my area would make disposables a smelly disaster come summer—NO THANK YOU, not near my house.

  •  No one likes to deal with pooh but the thought that I could just through away dirty nappies for my children to deal with later in life really got to e.

  •  Getting to talk to people , after all everyone is curious as to where  your baby got there cute nappies from.  Plus nappies on a washing line catch everyone’s eye.

  •  You can't beat seeing cloth nappies swaying on a washing line, don’t believe me try it yourself, or ask an older relative.

I will be adding more to this page about the environmental and financial benefit of cloth nappies, though this information is readily available all over the internet and I wanted to offer a personal summary of what I have found the best about cloth nappies.
